Hey folks. Man, I'm knackered today... thank the Fonz it's Friday, that's all I can say!

I took yesterday off because of feeling bleccch and totally wiped out. Am I wicked? Yes, because there is no rest for me. Clearly I must be :( My sister and her husband turned up for their visit last night, so yay. IT looks like they've made loads of plans, and they're only here for a week or so, so hopefully there will be no more fights! Urgh, so sick of dramacakes...

What else? I'm going to see Martha Wainwwright tonight. She is TEH AWES... did I mention I spoke to her when I went to Glasto? Oh yeah ... I bumped into her at 3am in Lost Vagueness. I tapped her on the shoulder and said "Excuse me... can I just say your set was awesome!" She gave me a big smile and said thanks... *melts*

Mostly for this weekend I want to LIE AROUND AT HOME and do not very much! But I know the universe has other plans. Ah well. Bring on the party party... *girds loins*

(And isn't that one of the weirder expressions? How do you gird your loins exactly? Is girding anything like gilding? If so, yeowch!)

You gird your loins with SILICONE CUPCAKE CASES

Well the loin girding sounds like a party in and of itself. Otherwise, wiki has nothing for me so we'll have to wait for Simon.

Girding your loins derives from the verb gird, root of engirdle. And loins as in, well, loins. Literally it denotes the act of tying up your belt tighter in preperation for action. Or in Roman times tying up your toga. In medieval times it could refer to the act of girding/encircling your loins/ass in armour, in preperation for battle. These days it's mostly just the act of remembering to do up your zipper and retie your belt before getting up from the couch to answer the door.

It may also have an early Christian church Greaco-Roman theme.

"So gird the loins of your understanding; live soberly; set all your hope on the gift to be conferred on you when Jesus Christ appears. As obedient sons, do not yield to the desires that once shaped you in your ignorance. Rather, become holy yourselves in every aspect of your conduct, after the likeness of the holy One who called you" (I Pt 1:13-15).

"Gird me, O Lord, with the cincture of purity and extinguish in my heart the fire of concupiscence so that, the virtue of continence and chastity always abiding in my heart, I may better serve Thee."

In a Christian sense I ~think~ girding your loins can refer to priestly vestments. Which, knowing the early Christians, probably included putting on a too-tight belt to stop yourself from having unpure thoughts.

I have a vague memory of Ceaser ordering his men to Gird their loins before going into battle with the Celts.

Best not. I'm not 100% sure I'm accurate about this. And I'm too depressed to look it up and check.
