Right... so my mother toppled off a chair while trying to water a plant and landed on her face. Ouch.

The x-rays showed fractures in the two uppermost vertebrae in her spine... the very top of the neck. The doctors in Bahrain immediately insisted she needed surgery right away to fix it in place OR SHE WOULD DIE!!! (er, emphasis mine)

Not trusting any surgeon she could find in Bahrain, my mother went to Saudi this morning. (The hospitals there are much better. Hey, who knew?) They did more scans, X-rays and MRIs, and found something interesting:

The broken vertebrae were fractured about 20 years ago.

Seeing as it's something she's lived with all that time (apart from the occasional complaint about having a stiff neck) and because it's nowhere near life-threatening, the surgeon advised her to leave it, issued her with a neck brace and sent her home for a solid week of doing nothing, followed by a week or so of doing very little at all.

So there you go. And the moral of the story? My mother is tougher than Arnold Schwarzenegger. Don't mess with my family. We keel you.
