LEST I FORGET

Oh yeah, the LJ Boycott...

Like a lot of other people, I'm really annoyed by a company that makes major changes in its policies without informing people, or otherwise continually messing up their PR.

So - although I really doubt it will make any difference or bring the LJ bosses crying to their knees, I am joining in with the Propsed LJ Boycott.... from Midnight GMT tonight to Midnight GMT tomorrow night, I will not post or comment, nor log in and read.

And if you're listening, God? It's me, Margaret... er, LJ? Stop messing things up!

(In case you live further into the LJ cave than I do: it's because all new free accounts come with ads attached - disgusting - and because LJ have filtered the list of Most Popular Interests to remove unsightly interests like Bisexuality and Homosexuality - questionable, worrying, and make Hulk Smash me cross).

I'm boycotting by default simply because it's a holiday for us and I will be spending the day napping as much as possible.

I really don't care much for these boycotts though. Strongly Worded Letters and petitions would be more appropriate, however, the nature of this medium leads to far too much wank and turns any such effort into a waste of time. Almost as bad as sending crackers to Sci Fi after they cancelled Farscape.

Changes can be forced upon even the Big Businesses if the right people put their minds to it and get to the top. The wankers need to recognize that and get on board rather than undermine the efforts without the wank.

(Once, many moons ago, I was one of those right people. Now, please refer to what I said about napping.)

... except the save farscape campaign was instrumental in getting the mini-series made...

Now the people who sent in bottles of Tabasco when roswell was cancelled? They were wasting their time.

[identity profile] nightxade.livejournal.com 2008-03-20 06:25 pm (UTC)(link)
You think Farscape's mini was made merely because the Sci Fi execs were spammed with crackers?

The Save Farscape Campaign was pretty big stuff, including ad campaigns, sending DVDs to soldiers, emails, letters, phone calls and even a cheque for $60.

Not merely "Let's not watch Sci Fi channel today."

As I said in my post, you want to get through to the big bosses, you have to speak a language they understand. They don't understand fandom, but they do understand quantity of fans.

Fair 'nuff, yes, it was less the crackers as it was all the other stuff. I think there was a 'lets boycott the sci fi channel' movement, but they got derailed because it was pointed out, quite correctly, that such a move would be childish and self-defeating.

[identity profile] nightxade.livejournal.com 2008-03-20 06:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Apparently some people (I assume women) sent their bras as well. I'm fairly certain the bras and crackers weren't what turned the hearts of the execs. Unless they really liked soup.

[identity profile] gonzo21.livejournal.com 2008-03-20 06:58 pm (UTC)(link)
They also got flowers, gift baskets, and I think at one point a singing telegram turned up at the Sci Fi channel offices.

Now that's how you garner press attention.

The ad campaign was probably the kicker. If I were an exec, I'd read that as "My God! These Farscape fans have enough money to do this? Think of how much they will spend on the DVD release! We all know Lou Diamond Philips is still alive because of straight-to-DVD. Surely we could make a good bit of cash here!"

Is LDP still working?

[identity profile] nightxade.livejournal.com 2008-03-20 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Not sure, but J was watching an AWESOME film "starring" James Vanderbeek of Dawson's Creek fame. It was about a DEADLY SQUID. IN CANADA. Maybe LDP is allowing others to play?

[identity profile] gonzo21.livejournal.com 2008-03-20 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Last time I saw LDP it was in an erotic drama about a frustrated housewife who found love with her hunky gardener, but then there was MURDER!

It was part funded by LDP, and he got to have a lot of sex in it. Go figure.

[identity profile] nightxade.livejournal.com 2008-03-20 07:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Whoa he's funding his own straight-to-DVD? That's awesome! Brilliant entrepeneurship.

Was it totally gooder than BATS?

[identity profile] gonzo21.livejournal.com 2008-03-20 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, the hottie in it plays Ellen Tigh now.

... she used to be a lot hotter.

Also, is it ignorant of us to be having this discussion in i_kender's journal when he's planning to participate? He's probably going to kill us for all the comment spam when he does check LJ later on.

[identity profile] gonzo21.livejournal.com 2008-03-20 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Shush, that's part of the fun!

So, I heard all the people planning on striking tomorrow are secret supporters of George Bush.

[identity profile] nightxade.livejournal.com 2008-03-20 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh? I thought they were terrorists? Will that's certainly a mixed message! I'm terribly confused now!

[identity profile] murraynz.livejournal.com 2008-03-20 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Homos? Seriously?

That's... fucking annoying but LJ is my crack.
