Elements of my dreams last night:
- 3 World of Warcraft style characters fighting a giant Great White. There were so arrogant in their abilities that they put on a half-hearted fight, bored and sure of victory. So when one of them died (for good... none of this getting back up again malarky) the other 2 were stunned and distraught and guilty.
- Wendy posting a video blog of all the presents she had received for her birthday, including awesome gifts that
![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
- Looking after a gaggle of small children who were incredibly badly behaved, and left fragments of Lego and toys covering every square inch of the floorspace in our house. Having to turn away random street urchin kids who wanted to come into the house and play as well.
Plus:
- I found out a secret yesterday, but I can't tell you what it is yet. It's good though :)
- I installed and started playing Portal, one of the games that comes in The Orange Box with Half-Life 2... you may have heard about it, it got lots of rave reviews last year. It's great so far, very addictive. I zoomed through the earlier levels, which are ridiculously easy. Then it gets suddenly quite hard. No cheats or walktroughs or solutions for me though... I want to puzzle it out for myself. It's that kind of game.
- For no reason at all, I bought a USB dongle thing that lets me watch Freeview channels on my computer, and a booster antenna to go with it. Lord knows I don't need it. But boys and toys you know...
- My Paladin in World of Warcraft just hit Level 49 (out of a maximum of 70) so I'm doing alright there.
- My girlfriend roxxor, and can kick your girlfriend's ass.
- Life is good :)

Date: 2008-01-15 07:52 pm (UTC)And, at my level? Yeah, you'd pwn me. But once I hit level 70, I'll have buffs... paladins are one of the hardest classes to kill because they can heal, shield, cast spells, and still pack a wallop.

Date: 2008-01-15 08:07 pm (UTC)We go to 75 in FFXI ;)
Do your PLDs really pack a wallop? Ours can't really bring on the beat down in comparison to a Samurai or Dark Knight for example, but they can certainly take it and are fondly known as meat shields. They have competition for the tank role (since FFXI is heavily party-based) because Ninjas discovered an unintended role for themselves when loaded up with evasion gear and their shadows.
Is there anything similar to a Red Mage in WoW? I believe your Hunters are similar to Beastmasters (my other 70+ character).

Date: 2008-01-16 01:45 pm (UTC)White Mage: White magic (duh) - curative and defensive
Red Mage: Lower levels of black and white magic, but with the main focus on enfeebling, with the added "skill" of being able to melee (but a Red Mage who does so in party is likely to be kicked -- big debate... oh the drama). Refresh (MP regen) whore.
Blue Mage: Various spells gathered from mobs. Can effectively melee, making Red Mages cry.
Scholar: This is new so I'm not entirely read up on it yet, but I understand a Scholar can more or less enhance the magic of choice. A good support job (you can use any job in a support role, but there are certain acceptable supports for each job, of course.)
Summoner: Uses magic to summon avatars with various elemental abilities.
Bard: (not a mage) Plays songs to debuff mobs, but mainly to buff the party.
A RDM/NIN is virtually undefeatable. There's some psychotic Japanese guy going by the name of Avesta that has accomplished some tasks that require anywhere from 2-36 players. Granted, he takes hours and hours to do so and will sometimes require support in order to control adds, but he's considered godlike.
/NIN is TEH subjob for any melee, or at least it was, until changes were made to Samurai and such to make life more interesting.
Your PLD sounds about the same then. WARs were the tanks prior to the introduction of PLDs and later NINs.
The jobs are quite interesting in FFXI, and since it's so heavily party-based, it's interesting to see how they work together. Of course, that means some jobs get shafted while others are in high demand. Then changes are made or new expansions come out that alter the playing field. People bitch and whine until someone bothers to find an alternative. It's like real life.

Date: 2008-01-16 02:52 pm (UTC)WOW Priest = White Mage, curative and defensive.
There's also the option to be a Priest specialising in dark magic (Shadowpriest) ie damage - this is closest to your Black Mage.
Then there's the Warlock, who would seem to be a mix of your Red Mages (enfeebling, curses etc) and the Summoner (demon avatars).
Nothing equivalent to Blue Mages, Scholars or Bards - the Paladin is probably the best buffer in WOW.
We also have the Shaman (elemental magic and party buffs, using totems which appear on the ground and can be destroyed), the Druid (nature magic, and transforming into useful animal forms), and Mages, who can specialise either in Fire (damage) or Ice (slowing and freezing attacks).
Other classes are the Warrior, Rogue and Hunter ( like rangers... distance attacks with bows or guns, animal companion). Damn it. I feel cheated now. I want more classes. Ninjas! Barbarians! Kender Wild Mage!
FEEL IT!
Date: 2008-01-16 03:39 pm (UTC)So first. We go to 75, with a subjob at 37 and access to all abilities (except the 2-hour) up to that level.
We had 2 new jobs added in the last expansion, Dancer and Scholar. Dancer seems to be another slap in the face of RDMs that aren't allowed to melee, but I really don't know enough about it to judge. I'd hoped for a Geomancer, that pulls power from the elements around it. The game is heavily element based so it just made sense. Bah!
Anyway, our other jobs are:
Warrior
Monk
Thief: Probably like your Rogue, but has neat abilities that make it very helpful to a tank by dropping massive amounts of hate on them.
Samurai
Dark Knight: Very powerful melee, with some black magic spells that aren't really useful other than Drain and Aspir and Stun. Get hate and die alot.
Beastmaster: Considered a solo class, though the makers didn't intend it to be so (similar to them not intending NIN to be a tank). You have "jug" pets of various levels, but are most powerful if able to charm pets around you. Pets serve as your tanks. Great way to learn and understand the hate system. And die alot.
Ranger
Dragoon: Wyvern pet. Often refered to as lolDRG, but the ones I've played with are pretty damn powerful and tax my MP because of their hate gain.
Corsair: 'Luck-based' job that uses cards and dice rolls to grant party buffs. Gimped ranger. One of the 3 precious refresh jobs.
Puppetmaster: Gimped monk, but the automaton is pretty handy. It has 3 forms: mage (white/black), tank, ranger.
A basic experience points party is 6 people: generally tank, 2 melees, 3 mages. My static party was WHM, BLM, RDM, SAM, DRK or RNG, PLD. My last static was COR, BLU, BLU, RNG, BST (main healing..heehee), NIN (which, at the end, was really just the rest of us leeching off of the BLUs who could essentially solo or duo the mobs).
Depending on the situations, you can have all BST parties. You can have manaburn parties that consist of 5 BLMs and a BRD (or just a BLM and BRD or RDM). You can have ammoburns (all RNGs).
In the second last expansion, we created TPburn parties because we had easier enemies that quickly respawned so you had to kill quickly. Experience gain is the big downfall of FFXI compared to WoW and I hated it. I stayed at level 73 for over 6 months because I hated XP after quitting my static. But I got 2 levels (80k+ exp) in something like 2 hours when TPburns came out. The ideal there were MNKs/NINs/WARs with a mandatory BRD, and a RDM as healer (manages MP better than a WHM, especially in such a fast pace). You didn't really need a tank here, you just needed to kill fast and limit MP waste through the use of NIN or /NIN shadows.
