What can I say? It’s a very good film but not a great one… it is very definitely worth watching, just never going to be as good as the previous three! The first half is decidedly better than the second half, he said, carefully avoiding spoilers… Ray Winstone has a very silly little moustache, and Cate Blanchett has a ludicrously appalling accent which I sincerely hope is deliberately awful! Shia LaBeouf is ok but gets too much screen time, it’s nice to see Karen Allen back as the one and only Indy flame Marion Ravenwood… although she doesn’t get enough screen time. There’s a brilliant cameo from John Hurt. And Harrison Ford is great as always… but he is showing his age, the script does poke at him accordingly, and his stunts are not nearly as death-defying as in the previous films.
There are some silly things going on towards the end of the film… you just have to sigh, roll your eyes, and go with it. Still trying not to spoil… although I can think of two different ways they could go with a sequel, I’d rather they didn’t actually. The ending is good enough as it is – let the old warhorse retire with some dignity.
At least until CGI actors are perfected ;)
I’ll post a more spoiler-y review in due course. Go and see it! The audience around us applauded as the title came up – yes, a UK audience! – and I still felt that old familiar thrill as the theme tune kicked in.
