Lost Girls?
Sep. 5th, 2006 11:56 amI'm beginning to be worried about the prospect that Alan Moore and Melinda Gebbie's Lost Girls might not be published in the UK.
I've been waiting for it for a while now, and the publication date has been pushed back and pushed back. Borders were clueless when I asked, of course, but a nice man at Forbidden Planet told me that publication has been put off indefinitely as there is to be a court case. Presumably at the forefront of this is the Great Ormond Street Hospital... apparently they're not happy about the graphic depictions of Peter Pan characters involved in sex acts (including the Lost Boys cheerfully fellating each other). I'm worried this might mean the book will be mired in copywright wranglings for some time to come. (Strangely Great Ormond Street have not been that bothered about people using Peter Pan characters in novels and short stories before... hmm, you think it might have something to do with the hardcore porn elements?)
But apparently it has been released in the US. It would be disturbing to think that the UK are becoming morre strict on censorship issues than the US, wouldn't it? But no, presumably this has to do with the Great Ormond Street Hospital kicking up a righteous fuss (in case anyone didn't know, JM Barrie made a bequest of the rights to Peter Pan to this children's hospital upon his death).
Still I can't help but think if the book was a straightforward (unillustrated) novel that no-one would have noticed its release. You put underage sex in a book or have Dorothy having sex with the Lion, Scarecrow and Tin Man in one scene and hear everybody go "So?".
You can find out more about the book here or here.
Whatever... I'm still excited to see it (um, not that kind of excited - the other kind) That is to say, I think it sounds like a great idea for a story and I can't wait to read it. So I'm not... I'm not waiting for all this legal nonsense to sort itself out. I've ordered my copy directly from the States.
Alan Moore, I salute you!
