Which really just means people should learn how to use sockpuppets properly.

Sockpuppets can be good if you want to go get anonymous advice from a community.

Yep, I can see how they could be useful when people want to keep a strict line between their public persona, and their personal persona, and don't want to manage it via filters. It can get messy though when things start to overlap.

It has less to do with sockpuppet as idea than with people starting drama, which, you know, will happen with or without sockpuppets.

The other time I got burnt by sockpuppetry was when somebody was logging into LJ as somebody else, in order to read the somebody-elses f-list and see things that they shouldn't have been able to see. Fortunately I spotted it was happening quite quickly, and pretty much stopped posting anything in my LJ that I wouldn't be happy with the whole world knowing if it came to it.
